Strategies Imperative for Success in the Airline Industry: A Case of Indigo

Abstract

This research paper analyzes the strategic factors responsible for the success of Indigo Airlines in the highly competitive Indian aviation industry. The airline industry is characterized by high operating costs, intense competition, fuel price volatility, and low profit margins, making sustained success difficult for many airlines. Despite these challenges, IndiGo emerged as the market leader in India through a disciplined and efficiency-driven business model.

The study adopts a qualitative case study approach based on secondary data collected from research papers, annual reports, industry publications, company reports, and credible news sources. The research examines the strategic initiatives adopted by IndiGo, including low-cost leadership, fleet standardization, sale-and-leaseback strategy, punctuality, quick turnaround time, frugality, economies of scale, technology integration, domestic market focus, and operational efficiency.

The findings of the study indicate that IndiGo’s success was primarily driven by its strong cost discipline, strategic consistency, operational simplicity, and effective management practices. The paper also discusses major challenges faced by the airline, including fuel price fluctuations, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2025–2026 operational crisis, which tested the sustainability of its efficiency-driven operational model.

The study concludes that Indigo achieved sustainable competitive advantage by prioritizing efficiency, reliability, and disciplined growth over luxury-oriented expansion. The case of IndiGo provides important strategic insights into cost leadership and long-term sustainability within the aviation industry.
